Strauss-Kahn defense to request material from prosecutors

Dominique Strauss Kahn imfIn one of the most controversial cases of Dominique Strauss-Kahn, the chief of International Monetary Fund and also the once considered front runner for the French presidential race faces seven charges including sexual acts and abuse, in connection with the assault of a housekeeping employee at a New York’s Sofitel hotel on the 14th of May, 2011. The Defense attorneys for Strauss-Kahn have formally requested discovery materials from Manhattan prosecutors which include copies of scientific reports as well as police reports and formal statements made by the hotel employee. In a formal letter to the judge presiding over the case, they have complained that some of the material has already been leaked to the media which would violate Strauss-Kahn’s right to a fair trial and claimed that they possessed material which could undermine the quality and credibility of the complainant of the case.

Cabinet approves legal questions in Benazir Bhutto case

benazir bhuttoISLAMABAD: The list of legal questions which will be included in the judicial murder of Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto reference case has been approved b the Federal cabinet. It has been reported by the Information Minister Dr. Firdous Ashiq Awan while speaking to media after the cabinet meeting that, five legal questions will be included in the reference, which includes whether the court had the right to sentence the former Prime Minister to death and if he was victimised by the court.

THAILAND-MYANMAR -NARCOTICS AND TRANSNATIONAL CRIMES

The 67th meeting of the Thailand-Myanmar Township Border Committee (TBC) has concluded peaceably as they cordially discussed the narcotics and transnational crimes. The meeting was co-chaired by Col. Jiradet Kamolphet, commander of an ad hoc unit from the 2nd Cavalry Regiment of Thailand’s Pha Muang Task Force, and Major La Miang-u, acting commander of the 526th Rapid Movement Battalion of Myanmar. Furthermore, the Thai side asked Myanmar to help track down criminal suspects who recently fled from Thailand, and to consider opening a temporary border cross at Kiew Pha Work area of Chiang Mai’s Chiang Dao district, to facilitate local border trade.

Spain court overturns convictions of Nazi propaganda disseminators

flag spainThe Apex Court of Spain on Friday overturned the convictions of four individuals charged with distributing neo-Nazi propaganda. The four men were convicted and sentenced to three and a half years in prison by the court in Barcelona in October 2009 for forming illegal association and propagating genocide. The men were arrested for distributing books and materials that defended holocaust. The Apex Court in its judgment opined that propagating Nazi ideology is not a crime unless it is used to incite violence or to create hostile climate in the society.
