Panama ex-dictator Manuel Noriega extradited to Panama

Manuel NoriegaPanama’s former military dictator Manuel Noriega has been extradited from France to his homeland to serve a term of 20 years for the crimes committed during his notorious 1983-89 regime. Noriega has been behind the bars in United States and France for the last two decades for the murder of his opponents during his rule.  General Manuel Noriega was never the President of Panama however he was the Panama’s de facto leader from 1983 to 1989, when the commission of the brutal murders happened.

Indonesia ratifies the CTBT

IndonesiaThe Indonesian Parliament will vote to ratify the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty (CTBT) which will reduce the number of states outside the CTBT to eight. This was announces by the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organization (CTBTO). The treaty has been signed by 182 countries and ratified by 156 countries. The eight countries which still remain absent from the ambit of the treaty include India, China, North Korea, Egypt, Iran, Israel, Pakistan and the United States.

Australia lifts ban on uranium export to India

india and australiaThe Labour party which is the ruling government in Australia headed by the country’s first female Prime Minister Julia Gillard, ended a ban on exporting uranium to India. The decade long ban was in existence because India has not yet signed the NPT (Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty). The lifting of the ban would be of immense help to India to meet the increasing energy demand of the country. India has a civil nuclear accord with the US and now Australia by lifting the ban is in line with the US.

Ocampo seeks arrest warrant for the Sudan Defence Minister

Luis-Moreno Ocampo The ICC Chief Prosecutor Luis-Moreno Ocampo has requested the ICC for an arrest warrant against the Sudanese Defence Minister Abdelrahim Mohamed Hussein. The charges leveled against him are the crimes against humanity and war crimes committed in Darfur during August 2003 and March 2004 conflict. Luis-Moreno Ocampo has been in the news a few days back for initiating trial proceedings against the former Ivory Coast President Laurent Gbagbo.
