Threat to Judicial Independence
A new law passed in El Salvador requires the country’s Supreme Court decisions to be unanimous.
The legislation could be considered a hurdle or a stumbling block to the principles of separation of powers and independence of the judiciary, fundamental to any democracy or any rule of law.
SUPREME COURT REJECTS NOORANI’S PLEA
The Supreme Court today dismissed Bollywood film producer SHAKEEL NOORANI’S plea for cancellation of SANJAY DUTT’S bail in the 1993 Mumbai blast case. Noorani, who was involved in a financial dispute with the actor, alleged in his plea that the actor Sanjay Dutt was behind repeated threat calls made to him. He accused the actor as the mastermind behind these calls from Karachi through the underworld.

Controversial Legal Aid Justice Bill in London
Legal campaigners are going forward to put pressure upon the government by holding marches across the country in protest at the legal aid reforms to be extracted or to set aside in the justice bill. In England & Wales, there will be marches in towns and cities and a rally outside the Supreme Court in London at noon and protested against Kenneth Clarke, the Justice Secretary over his proposals to restrict the availability of legal aids.
ASSETS WORTH Rs 700 CRORE FOUND IN TEMPLE SECRET ROOMS
Six cellars of the local Anantha Padmanabha Swamy Temple, which is being run by a trust of the royal family that had ruled Travancore in the past, are being opened one by one, as per Supreme Court order. The court had ordered for opening up of these cellars and to make a list of items found thereon, while hearing a private complaint. These cellars have remained off limits from everyone and are located underground.
Hearing of Hasan Ali deferred till July 1
The hearing on plea of the accused who dealt with the fake passport, Hasan Ali Khan, was deferred till 1st of July 2011.
Hassan Ali Khan is lodged in New Arthur Road jail in Mumbai and his bail petition was listed for hearing in the court of District and Sessions judge, V.N. Mishra.
