The police was directed by the local court to register an FIR against the IPS officer Jawahar Singh, who was suspended for allegedly outraging the modesty of a women police officer in 2002. The direction was made to the Maharashtra Director General of police in response to a report of the National Human Rights Commission.
The NHRC had recently forwarded its report to the court of Metropolitan Magistrate and it recommended action against Singh after conducting an investigation on the case that is allegations against him.
Magistrate D. H. Sharma, in a recent order, had directed the DGP to treat the proceedings of NHRC as a complaint and proceed in accordance with the law by registering a FIR.
It was observed by the court that, though a complaint was lodged against Singh, by the victim, for sexual harassment, it was purportedly to protect him that the Commissioner of police had not registered an FIR.
