TOUGHER CHILD ADOPTION LAWS TO COME UP SOON

child adoptionA new adoption rule which is likely to come into effect soon says that single men will not be able to adopt a girl child at all. Live-in-couples don’t have the option to do so.

There is a pre-notion that being single and being a father don’t go hand in hand. But choreographer Sandeep Soparrkar doesn’t agree with the view. He was the first men in India to adopt a child in 2007 and says that such a law is unfair as a girl can also abuse a boy child.

According to the new laws, if you’re single you can’t be younger than 30 years and elder than 50 years to adopt a child. But Leila Baig, a senior advisor with Coordinating Voluntary Adoption resource Agency or CVARA says that there is a reason why such laws are in place and that the primary responsibility is towards the child and not the parent. She says that girls have different needs which a single father would find difficult to fulfill.

She also adds to it that there are bigger issues like the system’s inefficiency when it comes to adoption. “The Government holds up the process at every stage. It takes almost 6 months to 8 months to adopt a child legally”.
