SOLICITOR GENERAL’S RESIGNATION ACCEPTED

Gopal-SubramaniamOn Thursday Prime Minister Manmohan Singh accepted the resignation of Solicitor General Gopal Subramaniam who resigned his office in protest of the decision taken by the Telecom Minister Kapil Sibbal to ask senior lawyer Rohinton Nariman to fight his case in the Supreme Court instead of him in the 2G scam case.

Mr. Subramaniam refused to make any comments on the issue of his resignation being accepted. He was appointed Solicitor-General in 2009 soon after the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) came to power. He is the present Chairman of the Bar Council of India.

It is reported that Subramaniam’s defiance against the advice of the former Law Minister Veerappa Moily, to continue and not to do anything in haste, was really taken as a serious matter by the Government.

The Government was also not happy over the direct rushing of Subramaniam to President Pratibha Patil on the ground that it was in compliance with the discipline and protocol to be followed by a senior law officer.

“I took this step to protect the honor and dignity of the august office of the Solicitor General” Mr. Subramaniam explained.

Mr. Subramaniam said that he was humiliated at the sight of the file of the 2G case being withdrawn from him.

With the exit of Mr. Subramaniam, the Government is in the look for appointing a new person soon for the post of Solicitor General – the second senior most law officer of the government after the Attorney General.
