INDIA IS NO MORE A SAFE PLACE FOR WOMEN

The escalating number of female infanticide, foeticide, and human trafficking prevalent in India places India as the fourth most dangerous place for women in the world as per a survey report.

Afghanistan’s violence and poverty places it in the top as the most dangerous place for women followed by Democratic Republic of Congo due to horrific levels of rape. Pakistan and Somalia is placed in the third and fifth position, in the global survey of perception ranging from domestic abuse and economic discrimination to female foeticide, genital mutilation and acid attacks in the survey conducted by Thomson Reuter’s Trustlaw Women, a hub of legal information and legal support for women’s rights.

Three of these countries are in South-Asia. The poll asked 213 experts in the field from five continents to rank countries on their overall perception of danger as well as by six categories of risk namely health threats, sexual violence, non-sexual violence, harmful practices rooted in culture, tradition and or religion, lack of access to economic resources and human trafficking.

The poll stated the reason for India to be in the fourth position due to female infanticide, foeticide and human trafficking. As per a survey in 2009, it was reported that at least 100 million people were involved in trafficking. The CBI has also estimated that in the year 2009 about 90 per cent of trafficking took place within the country and that there were three million prostitutes of which 40 per cent were children. Other forms of exploitation included forced labor and forced marriage.

As per the Union Population Fund “In India, up to 50 million girls were thought to be ‘missing’ over the past century due to female infanticide and foeticide”.

Hence the only solution which can be prescribed for making India a safe country for women population can be by preventing the activities of human trafficking by suggesting appropriate and adequate punishments to those who are committing it and to spread the awareness among the poor, uneducated and backward community people about the importance of a girl child in their lives and to promote the awareness that no distinction has to be made between a boy child and a girl child. Also that, the girl child should be protected in the present society so as to maintain the adequate ratio of boy and girl child.
