An unprecedented move was taken by the Senate of US when it extended the tenure of FBI Director Robert Mueller up to two years more. It came a day after President Barack Obama signed legislation making an exception to the 10-yr limit for an FBI chief to serve. The vote was 100-0.

Mr. Mueller was appointed as the head of the FBI by the former President George W.Bush and had taken office a week before the 9/11 attacks. Mr. Obama is reported to ask him to stay in office because of the changes taking place in the two Major positions of the Defense Secretary and CIA director.
Praising the work of Mr. Mueller, Senator Charles Grassley of Iowa, a top Republican on the Judiciary Committee said that since taking office Mr. Mueller has overseen a top-to-bottom transformation of the FBI from a domestic law enforcement agency to a National Security Agency.

Mr. Mueller, 66, has had a long list of distinguished achievements which includes serving in the Marines in the Vietnam War, holding positions as a public prosecutor, heading the Justice Department criminal division and U.S. attorney in San Francisco before becoming FBI director on Sept. 4, 2001. His 10-year term was to have expired next week.
