India claims the world’s largest uranium reserves found

India claims to have discovered the world’s largest uranium reserves. It has been found in the southern state of Andhra Pradesh.

It has been predicted that the uranium reserve will provide up to 150,000 tons of uranium. Srikumar Banerjee head of the Atomic Energy Commission of India said it was a four year long survey and had indicated that Tumalapalli mine near Hyderabad has reserves.

The operation has scheduled to begin operating by late 2011.

The Atomic Commission has confirmed that the mine has 49,000 tons of uranium and could have three times of that amount.

He added if that is the case it will become the largest uranium mine in the world.

India as a rapidly growing economy remains short of power in nuclear field. Less than three per cent of its energy is being supplied from nuclear plants. This reserve will not provide India high nuclear benefit but also find a good stand for India in nuclear powerful countries.
