Sumit Walia, 26, arrested last month by the Department of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) was granted bail by the Delhi court. He was arrested for importing super-luxury cars in the names of diplomats and embassies to evade import duty.
He was granted bail by Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate, Amit Bansal, as Sumit’s defence counsel convinced the court that he would assist the investigators during the probe.
DRI had confisticated 40 high-end luxury cars which Walia has allegedly admitted to have imported. During the course of investigation, DRI realized that a luxury car- Aston Martin was imported duty free in the name of Do Trong Heiu, a diplomat in the Vietnam Embassy which was subsequently seized by the DRI.
Sumit Walia has admitted to have imported the seized Aston Martin on the basis of exemption certificate provided by one Rajiv Sood for which he paid him 5 Lakh.
Moreover, Walia imported a Bently in a similar manner and sold it off to a local buyer. According to DRI, in these two cars only, Walia evaded duty to the tune of 1.42 crore.
