Women should be given priority for top law jobs

One of Britain’s most senior judges has triggered controversy by declaring that women and ethnic minorities should be given priority for top judicial appointments.

Master of the Rolls Lord Neuberger wants to use new legislation to favor female and minority candidates over men if they are equally qualified for a role.

But the view is likely to be seen by critics as supporting illegal positive discrimination.
The peer has suggested that the judiciary should also consider reforms including more part-time jobs for judges and job-shares to help increase the number of women judges.

Lord Neuberger, who as Master of the Rolls is the second most senior judge in England and Wales, said:  ‘The proportion of women and ethnic minorities among the senior judiciary is worryingly small. It is clear that we are moving in the right direction, but very slowly.’
He said that if the candidates are male and female both have equal qualifications then the job should be given to the female.
