FIVE RAPES IN THE LAST 48 HOURS

5 rapes in 48 hoursIn the state of Uttar Pradesh, five new cases of rape have been reported since Sunday. On Sunday, a 35 year old woman was gang raped by 5 men and burnt alive in Etah while a Dalit teenager was raped and killed in Gonda district. Another 12 year old girl was raped and murdered in Sitapur on Monday.

Also more reports of rape cases have been filed from Kanpur and Firozabad. This chain of incidents triggered angry outbursts from opposition parties, with the Samajwadi party dubbing the state “balatkari Pradesh (rapist’s state)”. Party President Akhilesh Yadav, from whose parliamentary constituency one such incident had been reported earlier, demanded a high level probe into the incident.

In Etah District, five persons entered a woman’s house on Sunday night; gang raped her and set her body in fire. Special director general of law and order informed the media that among the five, three persons were arrested.

In Gonda District, a 12 year old girl was raped and killed. She had been missing since June 17. On Sunday, a villager found her dead body in a sugarcane field. In this case the two accused have been arrested.

In the rape and murder case in Sitapur, no arrests were made till the time of going to press.

In Firozabad, a 14 year old girl was raped in Sirsaganj village on Sunday night. An FIR has been registered and the station officer had been suspended for not registering the case.

In Kanpur, a woman claimed that she was kept captive in a hotel for three days and gang raped, but the police denied it. In another case where the women resisted a rape attempt, she was shot. She is in a serious condition now at hospital.

And in Aligarh, a woman complained that a policeman outraged her modesty in custody.
