FIRST WOMAN PAKISTAN FOREIGN MINISTER

Hina Rabbani KharPM Yusuf Raza Gilani has recommended the elevation of Hina Rabbani Khar to the post of Foreign Minister.

Mr. Gilani’s formal proposal has been forwarded to President Zardari for his formal approval. Ms. Khar has been in the forefront in the race to become the new foreign minister, the post which has been vacant since the previous incumbent Shah Mehmood Qureshi had been removed in the February cabinet reshuffle.

The Indo-Pak foreign minister level talks scheduled to be held this month are believed to be the main reason behind appointing a person on the vacant Foreign Minister post.

Ms. Khar hails from an elite family in Pakistan, her father being the veteran politician Malik Ghulam Noor Rabbani Khar and her uncle being the former Governor Malik Ghulam Mustafa Khar. She was a PML-Q party member during the military regime of Pervez Musharraf and thereafter joined Pakistan People’s Party ahead of the 2008 general election.
