New Laws in California to protect Transgender Rights

Transgender RightsCalifornia Governor Jerry Brown signed in to two important transgender rights bills on Monday making it easier for transgender folks to get court ordered gender change and birth certificates and spreading awareness about their rights.

The Vital Statistics Modernization Act or AB 433 authored by Assembly member Bonnie Lowenthal simplifies the existing procedure for trans people to receive a new birth certificate or other identifying documentation that reveals their current gender. Earlier judges were to decide whether a person had undergone clinically fitting treatment. The new law keeps the judges away from making medical decisions as transitioning is a medical and personal process. Judges shall just verify the notes given by the doctors and decide on issuing the ID.
