2nd postmortem confirms murder of UP minor girl

LAKHIMPUR: The second autopsy of the minor girl who was found hanging in a police station compound has confirmed that she was murdered. But the postmortem failed to confirm rape of the girl as alleged by her family members. The second post-mortem was done today after order was issued by Chief Minister Mayawati when the girl’s family refused to accept the report of the first post-mortem carried out by the local doctors.

The report had suggested that the victim had committed suicide. A team of doctors from Lucknow had come specially to carry out the second post-mortem. The 14-year-old was found dead on Friday, tied to a tree by her dupatta at a police station in Uttar Pradesh’s Lakhimpur Kheri district. Girl’s parents alleged that she had been raped. The three policemen who advised them to “take the body and run away” have been fired and have been accused of tampering with evidence in an FIR.

The UP government ordered new investigations late last night after it was criticized by National Human Rights Commission (NHRC). A team is being sent by the commission to report on the incident and has also sought a time-bound report from the UP police chief. Deceased went missing on Friday morning when she had taken cattle out for grazing. When she did not return till late afternoon, her mother went out looking for her and saw that the cattle had strayed near the police station. After a search, the mother said, she found her daughter propped against a tree inside the Nighaasan police station compound. The child was allegedly raped and killed in a room near this tree.
