LEGAL BATTLE OVER CYBER TERRORISM

cyber terroristsThe terrorism is one of the biggest challenges in the world today. The cyber terrorism is one of the most difficult attacks to counter in the recent times. The cyber terrorism as the name suggests makes use of the internet in an attack. The attack may be a terrorist attack or an attack  for political purposes. It is generally an internet based attack to disrupt large networks across the globe.  The term cyber terrorism is very wide.  It attacks the networks across the world without necessarily affecting the real world infrastructure, properties or lives.

It is a serious issue ranging different attacks in different forms. There are attacks via internet like Trojan, Virus attacks, Email spamming, Email Bombing, Malicious code transfers etc. The attacks may also be on human life. These include the privacy intrusion, theft of sensitive and confidential information etc.

Different countries have adopted different legislation for fighting against cyber terrorism. The State Assembly of Singapore approved the new legislation for launching pre-emptive attacks against computer hackers to counter cyber terrorism attacks. In New York, a bill was approved by the legislative body which considers cyber terrorism as a felony with a prison term upto 25 yrs.

Malaysia is also setting up an International Centre for fighting cyber terrorism along with its emergency response team to tackle attacks on the economy. The INTERPOL is also providing active support to curb Cyber Terrorism.  The UK has adopted the Terrorism Act 2000 which has laid many provisions in regard to cyber terrorism .

The Judiciary can be a key in resolving issues regarding cyber terrorism ,however it has to get over the hurdles like Jurisdictional issues. The efforts are being  made to resolve jurisdictional issues to help the Judiciary overcome the hurdles and help the judiciary to win the legal battle over cyber terrorism.
