Sushil Kumar, who won Rs 5 crore in the Kaun Banega Crorepati jackpot, was today named by the Rural Development Minister Jairam Ramesh as the brand ambassador for its flagship rural job guarantee scheme MNREGA. MGNREGA (Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act) aims at enhancing the livelihood security of people in rural areas by guaranteeing hundred days of wage-employment in a financial year to a rural household whose adult members volunteer to do unskilled manual work.
Sushil Kumar hails from Motihari in East Champaran, a naxal-affected district of Bihar. He works as the Data Entry Operator in the rural job guarantee scheme (MGNREGA). According to Rural Development Minister Jairam Ramesh, Sushil Kumar being a direct beneficiary of the scheme is the right person to represent it. According to Sushil Kumar, MNREGA can help stop youths moving towards Naxalism to a large extent. Motihari being a Naxal affected district has seen significant changes in the youth. The Government will make use of him in Bihar, Jharkhand, Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh to highlight the impact of NREGA on the rural masses.
