Kanimozhi bail plea rejected by Supreme Court

KanimozhiRajya Sabha MP and 2G scam accused K Kanimozhi looks at a long haul in jail as the Supreme Court today rejected her bail plea. The bail plea of Sharad Kumar, the Managing Director of Kalaignar TV, was also rejected.

The apex court asked Kanimozhi and Sharad Kumar to approach CBI special court for bail after charges were framed against them. The Bench said that CBI court can thereafter decide on their pleas, uninfluenced by the earlier bail proceedings. A Bench comprising Justices Chauhan and Swatanter Kumar has asked the CBI to come out with a status report on the loss to the state exchequer due to the award of 13 licences to one of the several high-profile personnel including former Telecom Minister.

The CBI has accused both kanimozhi and Sharad of being involved in the illegal transaction of rs.200 crore to Kalaignar Tv which is alleged to be a bribe given by the telecom operators that benefited in the scam.

The CBI has refused their claim that the money was a loan to their television channel.

Kanimozhi’s lawyer argued in the Supreme Court to grant his client bail on the ground that she was not an active decision maker in the financial and other affairs of Kalaignar TV, which was opposed by the CBI. Also her lawyer argued that she should be given bail, as she is a woman and because she has to look after her young son as her husband is working abroad.

Despite all these arguments, the Supreme Court rejected the bail plea and ordered to sent back to jail both Kanimozhi and Sharad Kumar for the alleged 2G scam case.
