Tunisian ex-leader sentenced to 35 years in jail

Zine al-Abdine Ben Ali to jailA Tunisian Court on Monday sentenced the ex-president Zine al-Abdine Ben Ali and his wife, in absentia, to 35 years in jail for embezzlement and misusing public funds.

The Court ruled Ben Ali and his wife to pay fines totaling 91 million Tunisian dinars ($65.6 million). The one day trial in absentia focused on $27m of cash and jewels reportedly found inside one of their places.

The Judge said the verdict on other charges, related to illegal possession of drugs and weapons, would be pronounced on June 30 as per the report from the Court room.
