India beat china in UN election

hardeepsinghIndia beat china in an election for Joint Inspection Unit, in the general assembly of United Nations, and will hold this office for a five-year term.

India’s permanent representative to the UN in Geneva, A .Gopinath defeated Zhang yang, the controversial Chinese ambassador to India, by 29 votes.

China has been on this post for last 10 years, the other Asian country which has been on the helm of affairs of this office has been Japan. India has served only once on this unit and that to 35 years ago in 1968-1977.

Gopinath was deputy permanent Indian representative in New York during January 2002 to September 2005. Gopinath has also served as Joint secretary (UN) during the period August 1997 to December 2001 at the ministry of external affairs, Government of India.

The joint inspection unit is a standing subsidiary organ of the General Assembly with a mandate covering the United Nations. It is composed of not more than eleven Inspectors serving for a term of five years. It has separately administered funds and specialized agencies.

This election has clearly confessed the popularity and reliability of India over other Asian country and also identifies its claim for permanent membership of UN.
