Amarnath is a famous Hindu pilgrimage and every year thousands of people go to Amaranth yatras as a shiv lingam is formed every year and shiva is one of the deities of Hindus. Swami Agnivesh, during the trip to Jammu in May, had allegedly said that the Amarnath pilgrimage is a religious deception and he did not understand why people go for such religious pilgrimages. Swami Agnivesh had termed the Shiva lingam as a geographical phenomenon that forms inside the Amaranth cave.

The activist had approached the Supreme Court of India after the Punjab and Haryana High Court dismissed his petition to quash the criminal action against Swami Agnivesh initiated at a court in Hisar District.

During the hearing on Tuesday, a Bench of Justices H L Dattu and Chandramouli Kumar Prasad seemed not inclined to accept the argument of senior advocate Gopal Subramanian, lawyer for Swami Agnivesh that many were just capitalizing on his alleged statement.
