CHILD LABOUR GENERATES 1.2 LAKH CR EVERY YEAR

Child LabourAccording to a report by Bachpan Bachao Andolan (BBA) titled “CAPITAL CORRUPTION: CHILD LABOUR IN INDIA” around 1.2 lakh crore rupees is being generated through child labour. These disturbing figures have come amidst the bringing back unaccounted money stashed abroad.

The study further emphasized that the greed for profit maximization, corruption and flow of black money were the main reasons for the sustenance of child labour in India.

The figure was reached by calculating the number of child labourers, income earned by them, illicit profits being generated by employers by not appointing adult workers. The study also suggested that there were about six crore child labourers in the country who assumingly work 200 days in an year on an average cost of 15 per child per day.

The amount so calculated is 18, 000 crore in a year. If the six crore child labourers are subsitituted with adults with an average floor wage of 115 per day, they would generate 1,38,000 crore and the difference between the two amounts is 1.2 lakh crore.

The employer does not report any income to the government, thereby evading taxes as well. Thus an illegal amount of around 1.2 lakh crore is generated by these employers.
