Bill passed over splitting of Uttar Pradesh

UP assembly passed a resolution for division of Uttar Pradesh into 4 parts in the starting of this winter session of the assembly in Lucknow. Inspite of large scale opposition from Parties like BJP and BSP.  There has been resentment against, the Mayawati government. And as a result it is likely to face a no-confidence motion with both the Samjwadi Party and the BJP planning to move separate motions against the government.

Supreme Court- Ex-wife can’t use husband’s surname after divorce

Supreme_CourtA Mumbai resident, for whom his surname seems to be really something worth fighting a battle even in Supreme Court as he fought a  long legal battle all the way to the Supreme Court to stop his ex-wife from using his surname. An assistant police inspector with the Mumbai police, however finally won the battle as the apex court dismissed an application by his former wife to continue using her ex-husband’s name after their divorce. As the apex court stated, “We are not inclined to interfere with the impugned order (passed by the Bombay High Court and family court).

Honour killers face death for 1991 murders

honor-killing-lawA judge in India has sentenced eight men to death and 20 others to life imprisonment for three so-called honour killings that took place in 1991. The men were found guilty of murdering a Dalit boy and a girl from a higher caste who had eloped together, as well as the boy’s cousin.  All three were set alight and hanged, the court in Uttar Pradesh state heard.

Telecom corruption trial begins

The trial for India’s biggest corruption scam begins today in New Delhi. The scandal involves Former telecoms minister A Raja and MP Kanimozhi, who are among the 14 other people from telecoms firms or government who have been charged. The allegation raised is that mobile phone frequencies which costs 1000’s have been sold at a fraction of their cost to private corporate. However, the accused 16, denies any wrong doing from their part. The proceeding initiated by calling upon the first witness, Anand Subramaniam, from Reliance Capital, part of the group owned by billionaire businessman, Anil Ambani.

Frisking of president Kalam in US

APJ-Abdul-KalamThe former head of state Mr. APJ Abdul Kalam was in US. For attending some conference and the incident took place when he was returning to home. The US officials forced the Indian airlines officials to open the door of the air craft.  The officials wanted to re-check India’s former president of having explosives after having scanned once and boarded the flight. The officials took a way his jacket and shoes for scanning.  The incident took place at New York’s JFK airport. It is not for the first time that president Kalam has been frisked. In April 2009, officials of America’s Continental Airlines frisked him at the Delhi airport.
