Cyber experts criticize governments move to censor the internet

After the government’s demand to social networking sites to screen their content before uploading it, the cyber law experts have criticized the government’s move by saying that it should not be left to the social networking sites to decide what contains defamatory content and what does not. The existing laws on identifying defamatory content and removing it from the electronic medium are what need to be strengthened. Such action taken by the government in policing the internet will lead to a large number of legal issues and challenges.  In the midst of this controversy, Google India is said to have made it very clear that they would comply with the laid down law of the land but they will not remove any content from their site only because it is found to be controversial.

DMK leader MK Stalin to face defamation charges

MK StalinMK Stalin, DMK Leader and the son of former TN Chief Minister M Karunanidhi has been threatened to be slammed with defamation charges by the AIADMK government.  The DMK leader had submitted a petition accusing the Chief Minister Jayalalitha of land grabbing charges in the Kodanadu area of the Nilgiris district, to the state DGP. This came a day after the Chennai Police had registered a case against him and his son Udayanidhi  in a land grabbing case where they had allegedly forced a businessman to give away his land at a rate which was way lower that the market price of the land.

No mining license issued during my term:SM Krishna

SM KrishnaThe External Affairs Minister SM Krishna has verified that no mining license was issued during his tenure as the Chief Minister for any illegal mining activity. This was after the Karnataka Lokayukta Court instructed the police to investigate charges of illegal mining licences issued by Mr. Krishna, for unlawful gains, while he was the Chief Minister. A private complaint had been lodged with the Lokyukta against Mr. Krishna and two other Chief Ministers, namely H.D Kumaraswamy and N. Dharam Singh, under the Prevention of Corruption Act for allegedly issuing illegal mining licences for unjust personal gains.

Gujarat Government on another fake encounter case

Ishrat JahanThe Gujarat High Court has ordered the CBI to investigate the fake encounter case, where a college girl Ishrat Jahan and four others were killed in cold blood by the Gujarat Police. This is the fourth case after the Sohrabuddin, Tulsi Prajapati and the Sadik Jamal encounter case that has been handed over to the CBI for investigation by the High Court. The Gujarat High Court by rejecting the state governments appeal to hand over the investigation to the Gujarat Police has created a dent on the already tarnished image of the police.

Lok Pal not to include Group C employees: Committees reversal of decision

lokpal-meetingLok Pal Committee makes Last minute reversal of its decision by excluding Group C government employees. Lok Pal Committee is back to the starting point yet again. They have refused to include Group C employees within the ambit of the Lok Pal. A day ago the Committee had recommended the inclusion of almost 70 per cent of the government employees under the Lok Pal but it has suddenly taken a U-turn and now does not advocate the inclusion of Group C employees but only the Group A and B employees which consist of only the top-most bureaucrats. It is significant to note that these Group C staffs constitute 60 per cent of the government employees. Without the inclusion of this section of government officials, the Lok Pal will remain as a meaningless and toothless weapon in the hands of the people. The Committee reversed its decision within 24 hours of its last recommendation to include the Group C staffs.
