Anti Gang Law

The police service of Trinidad and Tobago has benefited with this law passed by the legislature. After the bill has passed Attorney General Ramlogan gave the statement criticizing the law and said that the population can expect a more effective utilization of this law and former AG Ramesh Lawrence Maharaj said that it is not necessary to arrest persons in the state of emergency. He said that there are lots of mistakes in this law and some amendments are necessary in this law.

Yesterday AG Ramlogan said that he is agreed that application and implementations of the anti gang law by the police need refining. He said that the state of emergency empowered police and the army to statistic speak for themselves. He said the only shortcoming has been with this particular law only. Then he said that there is nothing wrong since it is been proved in many jurisdictions that the police have to be properly trained so that they can implement it properly and can gather relevant evidences for this.

PNP leader Rowley said that during the 2012 budget debate he will propose that police arrest under the bill will be done under the advice of DPP’s. But Ramlogan said that law already provides for that.
