Lokpal Bill likely to be tabled on the 9th

lokpalThe Chairman of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Law and Justice, which has been examining the Lokpal Bill draft, Mr. Abhishek Singhvi has said that there would be no delay except of a “couple of days” for the Committee to submit the report on the anti-graft Lokpal bill before the Union Parliament. Singhvi who met with the media after his meeting with the Rajya Sabha Chairman Hamid Ansari told the media said that is the report is adopted the following day, the bill is likely to be tabled in the Parliament within the next two or three days. Singhvi further added that the time extension is technical as it is rudimentarily for translation and printing of the bill and this cannot be expressed as a delay in the real sense.

Cyber experts criticize governments move to censor the internet

After the government’s demand to social networking sites to screen their content before uploading it, the cyber law experts have criticized the government’s move by saying that it should not be left to the social networking sites to decide what contains defamatory content and what does not. The existing laws on identifying defamatory content and removing it from the electronic medium are what need to be strengthened. Such action taken by the government in policing the internet will lead to a large number of legal issues and challenges.  In the midst of this controversy, Google India is said to have made it very clear that they would comply with the laid down law of the land but they will not remove any content from their site only because it is found to be controversial.

Indonesia ratifies the CTBT

IndonesiaThe Indonesian Parliament will vote to ratify the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty (CTBT) which will reduce the number of states outside the CTBT to eight. This was announces by the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organization (CTBTO). The treaty has been signed by 182 countries and ratified by 156 countries. The eight countries which still remain absent from the ambit of the treaty include India, China, North Korea, Egypt, Iran, Israel, Pakistan and the United States.

Rajaratnam begins his 11 year sentence in Massachusetts

Raj RajaratnamThe hedge fund Galleon group founder Raj Rajaratnam who was given the longest jail term of 11 years for indulging in insider trading, began his prison term in the Federal Medical Center in Devens, Massachusetts on Monday. This facility is located in the decommissioned military base Fort Devens, is for those inmates who require specialized or long term medical or mental health care treatment. Rajaratanam is said to be suffering from various health problems like diabetes, sleep apnea and high blood pressure and may also require a kidney transplant. The Sri Lankan born billionaire, last week had lost his appeal before the Federal Appeals Court to let him free while he appeals his conviction.

Godhra panel expressed discontent over the absence of the ex-Minister

Godhra The absence of the former Urban Development Minister, I.K. Jadeja, from cross-examination has invited strong discontentment from the G.T. Nanavati-Akshay Mehta judicial inquiry commission which was appointed to probe the 2002 Godhra train massacre and the post-Godhra communal riots in Gujarat. The reason for the absence of Mr. Jadeja was dismissed by Justice Nanavati as unreasonable and he said that now the dates of hearing would be fixed according to the convenience of the Jan Sangharsh Manch which was unduly put to trouble due to the “last-minute decision” of the Minister to absent himself.

India asks Facebook, Google to screen online content

Kapil SibalIndian Union Communications and IT Minister Kapil Sibal has asked the various web companies and Social networking websites to prescreen user content from India before putting it up online. This has come in the wake of some social networking sites carrying defamatory content about Congress president Sonia Gandhi and the Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. The Minister held a meeting with top officials of the Indian units of Yahoo, Facebook, Google and Microsoft and asked them to devise a mechanism where their staff would screen and filter and check for defamatory content before uploading any content online. Indian IT Minister Kapil Sibal showed them a website that was posted in the name of a religious site but which turned out to be a pornographic site. Kapil Sibal also said that for security reasons the Indian Intelligent Agencies would also want to monitor these websites and Social Networks.

Assange to take fight to British Supreme Court

Julian AssangeWikiLeaks Chief Julian Assange’s appeal has been allowed to the Supreme Court of Britain. The highest court of Britain will now decide whether he should be extradited to Stockholm, the capital of Sweden, to be tried for the alleged charges of molestation and rape of two women. The former hacker has been battling the extradition since a lower court ruled that he be extradited to Sweden to face the charges of sexual assault.
