The Supreme Court suspended Kasab’s death sentence

Kasab death sentenseThe Supreme Court on Monday stayed the death sentence of Ajamal Kasab, the accused in 26/11 Mumbai attacks for the reason that his plea challenging the capital punishment has to be heard in detail as due process of law has to be followed. The petition was filed by Kasab through jail authorities. The apex court has appointed an amicus curie, Raju Ramachandran, to assist the case and agreed that the matter will be dealt expeditiously. The case will be heard regularly from January 31, 2012.

Government to release recordings of Lokpal proceedings

lokpal audio tapeThe Government on Sunday has agreed to make the audio recordings of JanLokpal drafting committee meetings available to public. With this move the debate between the government and Anna Hazare’s team will be out in the public domain after a month the parliament finally decided to enact an effective Lokpal. This will bring transparency and restore people’s faith in the government. However sources say that only selective portion of committee proceedings will be exhibited. Elements not encroaching on the jurisdiction or working of the Parliamentary Standing Committee presently analyzing the bill will be made available whereas nothing that will embarrass the government will be made public.

Raja’s plea to attend SC hearing rejected

A RAJAThe plea of former Telecom minister A.R.Raja, an accused in the 2G scam to appear before the court to support his counsel during the hearing on October 10, 2011 was rejected by a special CBI O P Saini on Friday. The plea was rejected as the Supreme Court has not handed out any requisition concerning Raja’s production before it and without such direction it is not possible for the accused as a person in judicial custody to be allowed to be present in that court.

UN resolution against Syrian regime vetoed by Russia and China

UN Security Council Resolution to impose sanctions against the Syrian regime unless it halts its military attack against civilians was vetoed by Russia and China. The European backed resolution would have been the first such legally binding action taken by the Security Council since President Basher Assad’s military began using tanks and soldiers against protesters in mid-March. The UN estimates there have been more than 2,700 deaths. India, South Africa, Brazil and Lebanon refrained from voting.

The CBI registered Personal Enquiry to investigate irregularities by Common Wealth Organising Committee

A Preliminary Enquiry had been registered by the CBI on Tuesday,4th October to investigate ‘alleged irregularities in the appointment of officials with hefty pay packages in the Commonwealth Games Organising Committee.’ It was alleged that the Organising Committee under the chairmanship of jailed MP, Suresh Kalmadi, had appointed persons close to him breaking all rules and regulations and it is on complaints and references from Central Vigilance Commission on this regard  that the PE was lodged against unknown persons in the Games organising body . In its PE, the CBI has alleged that during the period of 2003 to 2009, persons who had no proficiency for assorted jobs were nominated to the OC and those who did not follow the instructions of Kalmadi and his assistants were allegedly removed. The appointments of senior officials in the Organising Committee  shall be investigated by the CBI. The organising body on the whole constituted about 2,100 officials engaged for diverse duties associated to the mega sporting event. Irregularities had been found in the recruitment procedures after a previous enquiry  by the CVC and the High Level Shunglu Committee.

 The Reserve Bank of India (hereinafter “RBI”), the apex financial regulatory institution of India, on 16th day of November 2011 issued a notification regarding the Processing and Settlement of Export related receipts facilitated by online payment gateways. E-Commerce activities are already week as compared to the potential of the same in India due to many reasons like, inter alia, poor internet reach. The government has adopted numerous policies to increase the reach of Internet. . The new notification, in the author’s belief shall further slow down the pace of E-Commerce activities in the country.
